Play for the Nuts

In poker circles Omaha is often known as "The game of The Nuts", because The Nuts is often what is required to win the hand. With so many hole cards out there at the beginning of each hand it's usually safe to assume that if a hand is possible after the flop then someone either has it or is going to be drawing to it, especially if the betting becomes heavy.

It is therefore vitally important to ensure that you do not go expecting to win big pots with mediocre hands. Top pair, two pair or a straight can be very powerful hands indeed in Texas Hold'em but in Omaha they can often be a long way behind the winning hand.

For the sake of your bankroll it is usually best to assume two things when you're playing Omaha. If the Community Cards have three cards of the same suit showing then somebody will have that flush, and if the board pairs up then assume that the winning hand will be, at least, three of a kind and most probably a full house. Once these two events occur then your top pair or two pair are usually doomed to defeat and your straight is not looking too safe either.

In short-handed play, or on occasions when the field has been narrowed down considerably before the flop, then you can sometimes expect that a lesser hand may still win the pot. However, if everyone who wanted to see the flop actually managed to see it then it is advisable to be wary of the best possible hand being held by somebody.

It is for this very reason that you should be careful about which hands you enter the pot with and choose your starting hands carefully. If you're holding 10-8-4-2 and the community cards are showing K-Q-J-9-9 then you're in possession of a Q-J-10-9-8 straight but you're also in mortal danger of losing the hand to anybody holding A-10, K-10, Q-10, or J-10 all of which will make a higher straight.

Then there's also the likelihood of a full house because of the pair of 9's. If the Community Cards have three of the same suit in them then there is a very, very strong chance that the flush will also be in play.

If you are drawing to a straight then always try to ensure that it's the highest straight and that there are no flushes and full houses possible.

The dangers of trying to win the pot at the showdown with anything less than the very best possible hands should now be apparent to you. The sheer number of cards dealt out at the beginning of a nine or ten player hand means that the winning cards are more than likely to be in somebody's hand.

You can try to win hands by bluffing but because there are so many big hands possible it will be very hard to shake off any opponents who either already have a hand close to The Nuts or a draw to such a hand. Of all of the games of poker offered by bet365, players will find that Omaha is the most challenging in which to execute a successful bluff.

If you start with the best hands and look to aim for The Nuts then your chances of success in Omaha are all that much greater. Playing poor starting cards and expecting to win with mediocre hands will only see you lose your chips very quickly.
