Playing Guide
The object of Razz is to make the lowest possible five-card hand from the seven cards the player is dealt. Unlike Seven-Card Stud Hi-Lo or Omaha Hi-Lo, there is no ‘eight or better’ requirement to win the pot in Razz.
There are a few specific rules in Razz Poker:
Aces are the lowest card.
Straights and Flushes do not count against the player.
The best possible Razz hand is 5-4-3-2-A, or 5 high.
Playing Razz
Razz is similar to Seven-Card Stud, except the lowest hand wins. Seven cards are dealt, but the best possible five card combination is used in forming a hand.
Razz plays as follows:
Before a game of Razz begins, all players place an ante.
Each player is dealt two hole cards and one card face-up. The player with the highest exposed must bring-in the betting by making a nominal bet or a full small bet at the lower limit. If there are two or more players with the same card, ties in card rank are broken by suit, with the order from the highest to the lowest being spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs. The player with the highest suit brings in. Action continues clockwise around the poker table until betting is complete.
Each player receives an exposed card, called Fourth Street. The first player to act is the player with the strongest (the lowest) exposed hand. This player can either check or bet.
Each player receives another exposed card, called Fifth Street. Again, the first person to act is the player whose exposed cards are the lowest. Starting on Fifth Street and for the rest of the hand, all bets are at the higher limit.
Each player now receives another exposed card, called Sixth Street. Again, the first person to act is the player whose exposed cards are the lowest.
Each player now receives a seventh and final card which is dealt face-down. As with previous streets, the first person to act is the player whose exposed cards are the lowest.
If two or more players remain when the final betting round is complete in Razz, the last bettors or raisers show their cards. If there was no bet on the final round, the player in the earliest seat shows the cards first (Seat 1, then Seat 2, and so on).
Razz is usually played with a maximum of eight players with limit betting, meaning that there is a fixed amount that can be bet per player per round.
Showdown - Determining the Winner
The player with the best five-card combination wins the pot. The best low hand wins the pot. If two or more hands have the same value, the pot is equally split among them. There is no precedence of suit when it comes to awarding the pot.
